At first glance, systemd might appear to be yet another “holy war” in the long list of debates that have raged within the Linux community. However, unlike the debates over emacs v. vi, GNOME v. KDE, and BSD v. GPL, it seems most users and developers aren’t being given a choice over the use of systemd in their respective distro. Many distributions have already decided to switch entirely to systemd and not offer a choice of any other method of init. Even Debian, a distribution that has typically taken a conservative approach to the adoption of new technologies has already chosen systemd as the only form of init for the distribution. This trait of systemd might be the reason for why the debate has been so heated.
