Amazon built their own IT infrastructure to support their online retail services that had high demand during a few times of the year, but sat mostly idle for the rest of the year. Through this, the company built their web services business model that allows them to sell their unused infrastructure. The Amazon Web Services team has been expanding their open source involvement through projects like Docker.
