An independent group of peopleĀ have taken control of a NASA satellite for the first time ever. The ISEE-3 satellite has been in space for 36 years and has remained unused for over 20 due to a dead battery. However, solar panels allow for 98% of the satellite to remain functional, so a small team old NASA employees have decided to take its control into their own hands and release all of the data it returns openly. From their mission control in an abandoned McDonald’s in Mountain View, CA, the team has already set the satellite up in a new orbit that will allow them to collect data for an extended length of time.
