The National Plant Genetic Resources Centre (NPGRC-Tanzania), in collaboration with Hivos, Bioversity International, Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resource Management Africa and other partners are currently implementing a project to explore the possibility of an open source seed system. Their goal is to combat the threats climate change poses by providing greater availability and diversity of four important crops through the Open Source Seeds Systems (OSSS).
The project’s objectives are:
- Piloting open source seeds systems to enhance the use of high quality seeds of climate – smart varieties
- Identifying and marketing channels with supportive financial services to disseminate best bean, forage legumes, millet and sorghum varieties
- Enhancing national PGR systems’ capacity to coordinate conservation measures to protect indigenous plant varieties and facilitate knowledge dissemination at the local, regional and international levels
