Building on the success of the Open Compute Project, facebook has launched a new open source project to design wireless broadband technologies. The program is called the Telcom Infra Project (TIP), and includes more than 2 dozen companies including Intel, Nokia, and many more.
The focus of this project will first be on separating the various components of the network infrastructure, which are often bundled together in proprietary packages. This will allow companies and other organizations around the world to deploy wireless networks much more easily. The company hopes this will help spur the building of better network infrastructure to connect rural communities with better wireless broadband connections, something that is extremely valuable to any company that relies on the internet for their services.
