The US National Security Agency has announced they will release GHIDRA, an open source reverse engineering tool, at an upcoming RSA security conference this Spring. GHIDRA is a disassembler that breaks down executable binaries into human-readable assembly code. The NSA first started work on this software in the 2000’s and has been sharing it with other US government agencies.
Discussions on Reddit indicate the software is comparable to expensive existing reverse engineering products in terms of capabilities, so it’s likely that the NSA’s motivation to release this is to get external assistance maintaining and improving the software.
