  • MIT Media Lab Makes Open Source the Default

    by Ben Pearson
    March 28th, 2016

The MIT Media Lab is a cross-disciplinary research lab that has produced work in wearable computing, tangible interfaces, treatment of neurological disorders, advanced imaging technologies, and more. The organization has previously relied on an internal committee to approve all requests to make software code open source, but they have now announced they will begin approving all requests to release open source code by default in order to grant more autonomy to their researchers.

    From the announcement:

This change is a reflection of preferences within our community, as well as an acknowledgement of our position in an increasingly interconnected world. Encouraging free and open source software realigns our policies with our mission. As an academic institution, we believe that in many cases we can achieve greater impact by sharing our work.
