OpenMotics is an open source home automation hardware and software system that allows users to control lighting, multi-zone heating and cooling, measure power consumption, and automate actions. The project started 10 years ago with a few simple inputs and outputs, but it has since grown to create a fully extensible home automation system. The company chose open source because they saw three primary faults with home automation systems that were available. First, home automation systems tend to be extremely expensive and try to be comprehensive solutions. Second, most aren’t maintainable by the consumer. Finally, most proprietary systems can not be modified by the owner. OpenMotics seeks to address these issues with their platform.
