A small group of students in the Netherlands have built and tested a 3D printer that uses a MIG welder to printer in metal. The fused deposition modeling printer works similar to the hobbyist thermoplastic printers that are becoming common, but is still limited in its resolution and speed. The group has successfully printed and number of small objects and they hope this design will serve as a springboard towards more functional 3D metal printers.
