Companies like Facebook have been closely involved with open source software, but as the cost of producing new prototypes continues to decrease open source mentality is spreading into other industries, including hardware manufacturing. The explosion of platforms like the Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and numerous 3-D printers has been coupled with the emergence of the maker culture. In 2006, about 18,000 people attended the first MakerFaire in San Francisco, in 2014 nearly 750,000 people turned out for MarkerFaires across the US. Open Source methodology is helping businesses expand new markets and test new ideas, resulting in increasing rates of innovation.
