The lack of funding to the OpenSSL project significantly contributed to the inability to identify the Heartbleed bug. This bug exposed an ongoing problem in the open source community: businesses are not supporting the open source projects they rely on. A conflict appears to be emerging between supporters of less restrictive open source licensing and supporters of copyleft licensing as many open source projects seek ways to produce revenue.
