Aleph Objects, the maker of Lulzbot 3D printers, and IC3D Industries have partnered to produce what they claim is the first ever open source 3D printing filament. There is a lot of open source 3D printing technology available after the expiration of patents related to Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), but most of the open source has been in the software that runs the printers and the printer hardware itself. Now, a white paper has been released that documents the process of manufacturing filament for FDM printers.
