Postgres has taken a number of years to reach a point where it is considered a legitimate alternative to other SQL, relational databases. Fueled by Oracle’s acquisition of Sun, many developers have been looking for open source, relational database protocols that are not subject to the whims of a major corporation. Today, PostgreSQL has reached a point where it rivals other SQL database technologies in features, and in some ways exceeds the functionality of technologies like MySQL.
