Android is one of the most successful open source platforms, but most of the services that have been built on top of it have suffered to the closed source creep. Cyanogen and Replicant have arisen as open source alternatives to Android, but they lack the diverse selection of high quality apps found in Google’s services. This underdevelopment of open source alternatives makes switching to a completely FOSS-based mobile experience challenging, and often impossible for many people.
