The AllSeen Alliance is an industry consortium working to develop open standards for the Internet of Things (IoT). They are currently assembling the Connected Lighting Working Group which will develop a framework that allows smart light bulbs to communicate with people and other connected devices. This has the potential to open up a wealth of applications for smart lighting for energy conservation and security among other things. Lighting was chosen as the first target in part because of an anticipated growth of 36.4% a year between 2013 and 2018 by the market research firm TechNavio. The Lighting Service Framework will enable greater interoperability between lighting and other devices and open the market to third-party developers.
