The nation of Uganda has reached 35 million people and the government has turned to free and open source software (FOSS) for electronic government services and platforms. The nation has done this to promote innovation, enable the development of customized services, and reduce costs. Open source has already been deployed in a few areas of the government including taxing services, financial information processing, and digitizing land records information. In the past, the government has depended heavily on proprietary solutions which has created considerable problems in areas such as translating software to local languages, and the switch to FOSS should help improve the freedom of Uganda.
