Valve recently launched a program to allow video game mod developers to sell their mods through Steam: Valve’s game distribution platform. The program was promptly removed after a severe backlash from the community which included a group of gamers on Reddit who decided to launch their own open source platform to improve competition in video game distribution services. Its called Project Ascension and it will feature a storefront that combines games from all popular video game distribution storefronts including Steam, Gog, uPlay, Origin, and others. The source code for the project can be found on GitHub.
