The open source movement has created an incredible amount of value for the software industry, but unfortunately it is still a major challenge for developers to get paid for their work, with many contributing their time and skills freely. Assembly is a new startup that recently received $2.9 million in funding to launch a platform where individuals can get paid to contribute to open source projects. Each project on the platform has a core team that decides where the priorities of the project are and can decide what tasks are needed and how much should be paid for completing the tasks. Assembly launched last year and has so far had over 4 million participants for 50 projects, 4 of which have turned into profitable businesses.
