The Chinese government is planning to release their own Linux distribution for desktop computers by October with a mobile OS following in the next 3 to 5 years. China recently banned the use of Windows 8 on government computers over fears of international spying. The goal is to offer an alternative to software from other nations and to bring their software development capabilities on par with the country’s hardware industry. This is not their first attempt to do so, in 2000 the Chinese Academy of Sciences released a Linux-based OS named Red Flag.
