Mozilla has decided to incorporate proprietary code into Firefox in order to support the new Encrypted Media Extensions standard from W3C. In this blog post, they state this goes against the company’s fundamental beliefs, but they have chosen this route in order to ensure that Firefox remains functional for users. The implementation is opt-in, and is wrapped in an open source sandbox in order to improve control over the proprietary code.
