FireChat is a smartphone app that uses mesh networks to send and receive text and picture messages. These mesh networks are formed by any device using this app and allows users to bypass the use of cell and WiFi networks. It first gained popularity in Iraq as the government shut down networks in an effort to combat ISIS, but is now seeing a new emergence in Hong Kong where over 100,000 protestors have downloaded the app to communicate during the ongoing protests.
