August 10, 2014 marked the 10 year anniversary of OpenStreetMap, the largest crowd-sourced mapping project on the internet. The project was started by a University student in London who wanted better map functionality on his own laptop, since then it has grown into a world-wide project where anyone is free to contribute information and the barrier to participation has been lowered drastically. the adoption of OpenStreeMap has been fueled largely by users who contribute information about their local habitat. Today, the project is focused on bringing turn-by-turn navigation to the project which requires immense amounts of data including speed limits, one way streets, and other road laws.
