Open source software development is drastically reducing development costs and time with open source databases, operating systems, and web servers leading the charge. Developers are ahead of this curve with nearly unanimous use of open source cloud, mobile, and big data platforms; today, only about 1 in 5 developers are not using open source on a regular basis in some way.
Open source is changing how software development is approached. The days of limited numbers of licenses and comprehensive applications suites that are built, tested, then deployed are ending. Instead, these models are being replaced by rapid iterations of complex combinations of multiple single-use open source applications. There has never been a better time to be involved in the development of open source software.
