In less than a year, the Linux Foundation’s Core Infrastructure Initiative (CII) has raised more than $5.5M in committed funds over the next three years from many of the biggest tech companies in the world. The Initiative’s latest benefactor is Werner Koch, who has received a $60,000 commitment. Koch is the primary developer behind GnuPG, a popular email encryption protocol; he recently announced he would be abandoning the project due to a lack of funds, something that is no longer an issue. Stories like this are demonstrating the value organizations like the Linux Foundation can play in open source.
