The GPL has been the king of open source licenses for a while now, but with the rise of services like Github, that is slowly changing. The GPL was once more popular than the rest of the licenses combined, but this is no longer the case as Apache, BSD, and MIT licenses have all grown in use. This trend started in 2004 and grew in 2010 when more new projects were being launched with permissive licenses than the GPL. Additionally, recent studies have found that the greater majority of projects on Github have no license at all (as much as 85%), something that puts these projects into legal limbo.
