Toonz is a popular animation software application that has been used to make some popular animated shows and movies including the popular TV series Futurama. It is often preferred because it makes it easy to combine hand-drawn animations with software-created animations. Japan-based Dwango has acquired Digital Video, the company that made the software, and has decided to release it as open source. The new version, OpenToonz, is set to be released on Monday, March 26, 2016. After this release, Digital Video will then be refocused to provide services such as industry commissioning, installation and configuration, training, support, and customization services. The company will also continue to develop a premium version of the software that will be available for purchase, but it’s not clear yet how the versions will differ.
