Apache Mesos has proven to be a powerful tool for Twitter to scale their operations and focus less on prototyping and more on how new services will consume company resources. Mesos is used to combine servers into a single shared pool that intelligently allocates resources on an as-needed basis. Mesos relies on containers separated by cgroups to operate and offers a large selection of plugins and add-ons to extend functionality.
