CP/M is an operating system that was released in 1974 to run on the Intellec-8, a computer built by Intel to show off their new microprocessor. CP/M was written in a higher level language that allowed it to be run on a variety of personal computers, a trait that was entirely unique at the time. Most computer manufacturers designed their operating system to work only on their own computer hardware. CP/M was able to achieve rapid growth and dominate the operating system market until the emergence of MS-DOS because of its portability. The source code from four different versions that were released between 1975 and 1979 has been released.
